Description

What are Triple Bonded Rubber Bushes, or Bushings?

Triple bonded bushes are typically used in vehicle suspension applications, just like single and double bonded bushes.  The key difference, is the addition of a third tube between the inner and outer tubes - all of which are typically bonded.

AVMR (Anti Vibration Methods) have a number of triple bonded rubber bushes, which are manufactured by us in the UK.  These have all been heavily used by well known automotive brands.

Why do we need Triple Bonded Rubber Bushes / Bushings?

Triple bonded tubes typically have a larger outer diameter which offers a greater overall rubber wall thickness.  Without the additional, intermediate, tube, the bush would be considerably softer in all directions - conical, torsional, axial and radial.  By adding the intermediate tube, conical and radial stiffness is increased significantly.

When conducting tests on vehicles requiring large amounts of vertical suspension travel, smaller bushes can have a notable impact (20% is easily reached) on spring rate, which is rarely desirable.  One potential answer is to switch the bushes for bearings, but this normally results in significant levels of high frequency vibration being transferred into the chassis.

A better solution, therefore, is to increase the rubber wall thickness on the bush, which allows for greater levels of deflection in all axes.  To maintain suspension alignment, it is important to maintain higher spring rates radially and conically (the axial spring rates are rarely relevant due to other forms of constraint).  This radial and conical spring rate is increased by effectively reducing the rubber 'height' in these directions through adding the intermediate tube.

AVMR's Triple Bonded Bushes

AVMR manufacture a lot of bushes / bushings; from a few grams to 56kg, a few units per year to over 150,000.  Very few of these are triple bonded as they are a niche product.  If you require an alternative size, please contact us.
